Slovakia adjusts its minimum wage by law each year after tripartite consultation, with fallback formulas that operate when social partners cannot agree. Figures below are gross, per Eurostat (earn_mw_cur), the Ministry of Labour and Eurofound. The unweighted average of the 22 EU national minimums is about €1,379 a month in mid-2026, so Slovakia’s rate sits roughly 34% below that benchmark.

Minimum wage in Slovakia: the rate

The Labour Code empowers the government to set the minimum wage by regulation after consulting the tripartite economic and social council; if no agreement is reached, a statutory formula based on average wage growth and inflation applies, and in some years the government has set the rate directly at the formula ceiling. The 2026 rate of €915 (hourly €5.26 for a 40-hour week) followed a 2025 rise to €816 that itself had been boosted by the formula catching up with strong average wage growth. Slovak law then layers a grading system above the floor: workers in jobs requiring qualifications get a multiple of the minimum wage by professional class (roughly 1.2× for skilled work up to about 2× for the highest class), so the effective floor in the trades is materially higher than the headline. Public-sector wage floors follow their own laws.

The recent path: €520 (2019), €580 (2020), €623 (2021), €646 (2022), €700 (2023), €693 (2024 — corrected downward slightly after a court/formula dispute), €816 (2025) and €915 (2026). The 2025 step (+17.8%) was one of the EU's largest that year, and the 2026 rise extends the catch-up; Slovak average wages have grown quickly in the car-supplier and shared-services economy. Coverage is among the EU's higher ones — several percent of employees exactly at the minimum and a larger cluster in the 1.0–1.2× band, concentrated in hospitality, retail, textiles, security and food services. Emigration of working-age Slovaks keeps pressure on entry wages from below.

The rate is gross and monthly; Slovakia's tax-free allowance (up to a set income ceiling, with the allowance fully preserved at minimum-wage level) means minimum earners pay no income tax, so the net is the gross minus small social contributions — one of the most favourable low-wage tax positions in the EU. Employer contributions add roughly a third on top. Enforcement sits with the National Labour Inspectorate (NIP), and underpayment claims are pursued with wage-difference recovery; the professional-class grading is also enforceable, so skilled workers can claim their class multiple even if the employer labelled the job unskilled. There is no youth sub-rate — the full floor and grading apply from the start of employment; students on work agreements (dohodovy) run under separate, lighter rules that nevertheless must respect the minimum hourly equivalent where the work is regular.

Youth and trainee rates. No youth ladder — the €915 floor applies from the first day; the grading multiples for skilled professions move the effective floor upward, not age.

How Slovakia compares

In euro terms, Slovakia's statutory minimum is €915 a month gross. Slovakia sits in Eurostat's lower band (under €1,000 a month). The table below sets the rate against neighbouring systems, the EU's highest and lowest statutory floors, and the EU average of roughly €1,379 (unweighted mean of the 22 national rates, Eurostat data for mid-2026).

CountryMonthly minimum wage (gross)Vs EU average (≈€1,380)
Slovakia€915−34%
Czechia≈€923−33%
AustriaNo statutory minimumn/a
Poland≈€1,119−19%
Hungary≈€906−34%
Luxembourg€2,771+101%
Bulgaria€620−55%
EU average (22 statutory rates)≈€1,379—

The comparison to hold on to: Luxembourg tops the statutory table at €2,771 and Bulgaria closes it at €620 — a 4.5-to-1 spread that has been narrowing slowly as the east converges. Slovakia's position relative to that spread defines both its wage-cost competitiveness and its workers' purchasing power.

Purchasing power. Slovak price levels are among the euro area's lowest, so the real floor performs better than the nominal table: at mid-2026 Slovakia sits mid-table in the PPS comparison, ahead of Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, per Eurostat.
